High Relief Double Eagles
1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS63 NGC. High Relief twenties are broken down into two types, Wire Rim and Flat Rim. The Wire Rim variant was not intentionally produced as such by the Mint. In fact, it was an unintentional error in production that resulted in a thin "fin" of metal that was squeezed between the tiny gap between the die faces and collar. It wasn't until late in production that Mint personnel solved (or mostly solved) the problem of "finning." The collectibility of the so-called Wire Rim has persisted over the past century and given collectors two variants. On this piece much of the wire rim shows, indicating it was struck between early September and mid-December 1907. The surfaces exude the rich, satiny mint luster these pieces are so well known for, and each side is cloaked in a thin layer of reddish patina. Close examination shows a few tiny contact marks, but none are immediately apparent to the unaided eye.
