Territorial Gold
1851 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, Reeded Edge, 887 Thous., VF35 NGC. K-7, R.4. Diagnostics include the eagle below the date, the reeded edge, and the outer ribbon of the reverse relatively close to the engine turning. These large Gold Rush-era slugs not only served a vital role in commerce out West before the opening of the San Francisco Mint, but they would leave a lasting legacy as an iconic issue in American numismatics. This example has pleasing violet and reddish-gold coloration. The design elements remain plainly visible for the most part, the sole exception being the date at the lower obverse. Myriad marks should be expected. Collectors looking for an example of this classic U.S. Assay Office emission would do well to consider the piece here-offered.
