Large Cents
1801 1C NC-5, B-9, R.8, Poor 1 NGC. Our EAC grade: sharpness of Basal State 1, net Basal State 1. There are only four known examples of 1801 NC-5, and all are in low grades. Noyes grades three of the four pieces Fair 2, and he grades this example Basal State 1, as do all other observers. Although it is the lowest grade of the four, and the lowest grade on the Sheldon scale, Noyes describes the surfaces as "Choice" and we concur. The other three are called "Average." Both sides are smooth olive-brown, and just enough detail remains to observe the massive reverse die break common to all four specimens.
