Gold Dollars
1857-D G$1 XF45 PCGS. Variety 9-L. The 1857-D ranks about in the middle of the rarity scale among all Dahlonega gold dollars, but it is considerably scarcer than some of its more highly touted counterparts, including the 1858-D and 1859-D. The lettering on this Choice XF example is a bit heavy-handed, with several filled letters on both sides and an up-and-down strike on the wreath. Those are minor factors, since the overall quality is good for a Dahlonega dollar. The smooth, greenish-gold surfaces retain glimpses of mint luster near the edges. Population: 12 in 45, 88 finer (7/17).
