Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1871 $3 AU58 NGC. Bowers and Winter suggest Thomas Elder is responsible for the relative collectibility of such a low mintage (1,300 coins). Elder offered a premium over face value to bank tellers and others who could furnish examples of this scarce date. Coins are often seen in lightly circulated condition, as here. Decidedly semiprooflike and well-struck, qualities synonymous with the issue.
