Classic Half Eagles
1838-C $5 -- Reverse Scratched, Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF. Breen-6517, Normal 5, Variety 1, R.4 From a modest mintage of 17,179 pieces struck during the first year of operations at the Charlotte Mint, the 1838-C is the only Classic Head half eagle from the famous Southern facility. This coin exhibits the sharpness of an XF40 specimen, with orange-gold surfaces that show the typical number of minor abrasions for that grade, plus a long scratch through E in UNITED and into the field on the reverse. The luster is somewhat dimmed by the noted cleaning.
