Liberty Double Eagles
1856-S $20 AU55 NGC. The S.S. Central America recoveries radically changed the availability of both 1856-S and 1857-S double eagles. Most of the seawater finds are resplendent in their own right, although the present Choice About Uncirculated coin may have been a land-based survivor. Original grayish patina gives the medium-orange surfaces the look of aged gold. Five points of wear on the highest hair curls suggests moderate circulation. The strike is otherwise boldly rendered and mint luster glows from sheltered areas.
