(1842-52) G$1 A. Bechtler Dollar, 27G., 21C., Plain Edge, K-24, R.3 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. Unc. August Bechtler took over the family's private coinage business sometime around 1840. The Bechtler gold coinage was widely accepted because of its consistent weight and fineness, and examples could be found in circulation until the Civil War. This sharply detailed gold dollar contained 27 grains of 21 karat gold. The surfaces are lightly marked and no actual wear is evident, but the luster is dimmed by the noted cleaning. Listed on page 393 of the 2018 Guide Book.
