Washingtonia
1800 Medal Baker-79, Musante GW-81, Hero of Freedom Medal -- Holed -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details. Struck in Silver. Ex: Norweb Collection. Plain Edge. 424.8 grains, 38.6 mm. This early and popular Washington medal is a eulogistic piece that was struck in a number of formats including silver, white metal, bronze, and fire-gilt bronze. Made in England, these pieces are from dies by Obadiah Westwood according to the 2016 Neil Musante reference. The Hero of Freedom medals are struck in coin turn, a Westwood characteristic employed on other medals.
This example is holed at 12 o'clock and has numerous small marks and moderate wear, which suggests that it was worn or carried as a valued memento. Researcher Michael Hodder was aware of only six specimens in silver (including this one) upon its appearance in the 2006 Stack's auction of the Norweb Collection of Washingtonia. This is the only holed piece. Two other silver medals appeared in the Ford sale, where they brought $14,950 and $9,775 respectively. In 1998, the LaRiviere piece brought $7,700.
