Hard Times Tokens
1837 S.S.B. AU55 NGC. Low-139, HT-464. Brass, 2.5 gms, 19.6 mm. An elusive R.6 maverick Hard Times-era token. The Rulau reference notes, "It has been suggested, without evidence, that S.S.B. could stand for 'Scovill's Superfine Buttons.' The die work and size seem to clearly indicate some connection with the button-making industry." The date 1837 is quite bold on this example, with a large 8 and the 7 with a prominent cross-stroke. The brass planchet is well-struck and problem-free, and all details are well brought up, even at the interesting, decorative feathered-floral peripheries and in the unusual, intentionally textured background on each side that calls to mind the surface of a modern thimble.
Ex: Troy Wiseman Collection (Heritage, 9/2006), lot 5974, which realized $2,185.
