Van Imhoff was a colonial administrator for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). He was Governor of Ceylon (1736- 1740) and Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies (1743-1750), dying in office. His visit to the Cape Colony was not a great success and he found that as the Dutch settlers penetrated further into the interior, they lost contact with the VOC.
