The medal commemorates the gift of the magnificent ceremonial cradle (depicted on the medal) from the City of Paris to Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie. The cradle was designed by Victor Baltard (1805–1874) and he also oversaw its creation. Today it is to be found in the Carnavalet Museum, Paris.
