Claudius II Gothicus. AD 268-270. Antoninianus (22mm, 3.46 g, 12h). Cyzicus mint, 1st officina. 2nd emission, circa mid AD 269. VIRT-VS CLAVDI AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust left, holding horse by reins with right hand and globe in left; [•] below / Laetitia standing left, holding wreath and anchor; M/C//–. Normanby –; RIC V –; RIC Online 899 = J. Mairat, "L'ouverture de l'atelier impérial de Cyzique sous le règne de Claude II le Gothique," RN 163 (2007), 28.1 (this coin, illustrated on pl. LI). VF, green patina, some light roughness and cleaning marks. An extremely rare bust type and seemingly unique with Laetitia reverse.

One of only five coins listed by RIC Online when searching for this bust type (type J61). One additional is in CoinArchives (Gitbud & Naumann/Pecunem 36, lot 750).

Both the obverse legend and bust type extol the valour of Claudius and stress his role as supreme military commander. Similar busts accompanied by a horse are seen during the time of Maximianus and Constantine the Great.
