First only illustrated. The Blue Coat Charity School, the brainchild of Revd. William Higgs and opened in 1724, stood on the east side of St Philip's Church. Enlarged several times, it was the subject of a complete rebuild as a 4-storey edifice by John Rawstorne [Rawsthorne] (1761-1832) between 1792 and 1794. It was demolished in 1935 after the school moved to Harborne, where it continues to flourish
