Ex Roma Numismatics VII, 22-23 March 2014, lot 1013.

Augustus' self-styled persona as the protector of the liberty of the Roman people is an obvious choice to champion on the coinage of Vindex as he led a revolt against the tyranny of Nero. The use of this particular type of Augustus (c.f. RIC 166) is also poignant in that it was one of the earliest issues from the mint of Lugdunum, established by the emperor in 15 BC. Once again, Vindex is indicating that neither Gallic independence nor the abolition of the principate is his agenda.
