Charles I (1625-49), Pound, 1642, Civil War issue, Shrewsbury, 119.28g, m.m. four pellets, carolvs: d: g: mag: britan: fr: et: hib: rex, Shrewsbury horseman left trampling on arms, plume behind, no cannon, exergual line, rev. exurgat devs dissipentvr inimici, declaration in two lines, relig. prot. leg. ang. liber. par., three Oxford plumes and mark of value .x x. above, date below (Brooker 803/795, same dies; Morrison D/2; N.2362; S.2939), heavily tooled in fields, otherwise good fine, rare.
This obverse die is noted by Morrison (p.199) to have been damaged before it had been long in use, obliterating the mintmark and creating numerous flaws on other parts of the surface. This would presumably make this an earlier struck example. See the next lot for an example with the same die after it had been damaged.
Estimate: £2,000.00 - £2,500.00
Please note the plumes are Shrewsbury type and the reference should read S.2918
