Herennia Etruscilla. ; Herennia Etruscilla; AE 27.5, 14.09g. RPC-1373. Obv: EPE????? [???????????]? (sic) Bust draped r. wearing stephane, crescent behind shoulders. Rx: ?????V ?? - ?? - ?????O? around, [?] / ? / ? - G / ? in field, Dionysus standing l., head r., holding bunch of grapes over panther and thyrsus. Ex Antioch Associates Flier, December 1995, no. 159. The obverse legend on this coin seems to omit a final N, needed to render the second name as well as the first in the accusative rather than nominative case. On the reverse the A of AMK in left field also seems to be missing; perhaps the A and M are ligate, though the essential detail, the cross-stroke of the A incorporated into the left half of the M, cannot be made out on our specimen. What is the usually indistinct object held by Dionysus in his right hand in Etruscilla's two Dionysus types (head left or head right) at Tarsus? RPC calls it a cantharus in both types, but on our coin it looks more like a bunch of grapes. Rare: RPC-1373 records 21 specimens, all from the same obverse die as ours.
