Thessaly, Larissa. Drachm; Thessaly, Larissa; c. 350-340 BC, Drachm, 6.14g. Lorber- 21. Obv: Head of nymph Larissa three-quarter face to l.; tiny AI above head, [GEY] on ampyx above forehead. Rx: Horse grazing r., forelegs bent, rein trailing from mouth into exergue; ?APISAI in exergue, small letters AI under horse. Lorber considers the letters AI, appearing here on both obverse and reverse, to indicate the die engraver's name, while GEY on the ampyx (headband) may be "an abbreviated epithet of the nymph Larissa".Lorber-20 and 21 are the two best dies of the early experimental Larissa series. It is hard to imagine a Larissa coin more beautiful than this with the artist's signature on both sides. GEY on obverse somewhat worn and AI sharply visible on reverse. Wonderfully centered which is somewhat unusual for these issues. EF
