GREEK COINS

Ionia. Magnesia ad Maeandrum. Circa 125-120 BC. Stater (Gold, 19 mm, 8.44 g, 12 h), Euphemos, son of Pausanias. Diademed and draped bust of Artemis to right, with bow and quiver at her shoulder. Rev. ΜΑΓΝΗΤΩ[Ν] / ΕΥΦΗΜΟΣ ΠΑΥΣΑΝΙΟ[Υ] Nike standing right in biga with horses galloping to right, she holds a whip in her right hand and the reins in her left. Apparently unpublished and unknown. Of the greatest rarity, an attractive and exciting coin of excellent Hellenistic style. Struck from a rusty obverse die, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From an English collection.
This hitherto unknown coin opens a new chapter in the history of later Hellenistic Ionia, since it provides evidence of the issue of gold staters alongside those known from Ephesos, Miletos, Smyrna and Tralles. While silver stephanephoroi are known struck by an individual bearing the same name as the magistrate we have here, they were minted c. 150-140, and were probably produced by our magistrate's grandfather (a neokoros of the temple of Artemis Leukophryene is known from an inscription of 112/111 BC and is probably to be identified with our magistrate). The depiction on the reverse almost certainly must be connected to a victory in the games held in honor of Artemis, but we know too little of the history of Magnesia in this period to be sure.
