Ionia. Phokaia. Circa 500-460 BC. Drachm (Silver, 19 mm, 6.75 g). Forepart of griffin to right, with open mouth and with his forepaws raised before him. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Imhoof-Blumer, KleinM., p. 91, 1 and pl. III, 16. SNG von Aulock 8013 (same reverse die). Traité I, 522. Very rare. Attractively toned, sharp and bold, with a powerful griffin. Lightly crystalized surfaces and with an ancient scuff on the shoulder, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
