GREEK COINS

Kings of Parthia. Artabanos III, 126-122 BC. Drachm (Silver, 18 mm, 3.93 g, 12 h), uncertain eastern mint - Traxiane or Areia? Diademed, bearded and draped bust of Artabanos to left. Rev. BAΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΜΕΓΑΛΟΥ ΑPΣΑΚΟΥ ΦΙΛΑΔΕΛΦΟΥ (garbled) Parthian archer (Arsakes I) seated right on omphalos, holding bow in his left hand. Sellwood 20.1 var. (Artabanos I). Shore 65 (Artabanos I) Struck from the same obverse die as Peus 384, 2005, 375. A very rare and unusual Parthian provincial issue. Somewhat crudely struck, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a Swiss collection, acquired from Pars Coins in San Jose, California.
One of the problems with Parthian coinage is the predilection of scholars for changing their minds about what the various kings were called! Long known as Artabanos II, the ruler who produced this coin is now termed Artabanos III (thus changing the numerals of all the subsequent Artabanoi.) In any case, this is a rare and unusual issue, presumably struck in a temporary, military mint.
