BYZANTINE COINS

Irene, 797-802. Solidus (Gold, 22 mm, 3.85 g, 7 h), Class II, Syracuse, 798-802. EIRIN BASILISSH Crowned bust of Irene facing, wearing loros and holding a globus cruciger in her right hand and a cross-tipped scepter in her left. Rev. EIRIN BASILI / CI Crowned bust of Irene facing, wear loros and holding a globus cruciger in her right hand and a cross-tipped scepter in her left. Anastasi - (cf.455). DOC -. SB - (cf.1602). Very rare, sharp and remarkably well centered on a broad flan. An exceptionally fine coin. Virtually as struck.

This extremely rare coin from the mint of Syracuse is somewhat unusual: normally there should be a pellet in the obverse field. The C-I is the mintmark for Sicilia.
