GREEK COINS

Kings of Macedon. Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (24 mm, 17.21 g, 8 h), "Pella", 325-315. Head of Herakles to left, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞANΔΡOΥ Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and, in his right, eagle standing right with closed wings; below throne, Θ. Price 213. Very rare. Struck on a short flan and with minor scratches on the obverse and some grafitti on the reverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From the Molard Collection, Switzerland.
The reason for the appearance of some very rare issues from a Macedonian mint, usually termed Pella, which have left facing heads is obscure. The suggestion that it was due simply to a left-handed die engraver is simple, but of no merit. It was much more likely to be an artistic experiment that was rejected by the minting authorities.
