Umayyad
Anonymous Bilingual Greek/Arabic Palestinian lead weight for one ounce/uqiya ca. 690 AD. Obv. G.A, rev. al-wa / fâ lillâh. 27.80 g.; Very fine
Ex Shraga Qedar Collection (= auction Münzzentrum Nov. 1978), lot 103.
An important early weight because the al-wafâ lillâh associates it chronologically with the pre-reform folles coinage, produced by the Umayyads around 70 H. in the Eastern part of the later Jund al-Urdunn. There is no reason to relate the inscription al-wafâ lillâh with any pro-Zubayrid group during the second Civil War, a theory brought forward by Wolfgang and Ingrid Schulze some years ago, as the phrase is sufficiently common on weights of the Umayyad administration.
