Abbasid, al-Muktafi (289-295h), dinar, Makka 292h, 4.22g (Bernardi 226Ef; Qatar 1309, same dies), with pronounced die flaws on obverse, flan slightly curved, good very fine and extremely rare. Struck from the same pair of dies, both of these dinars show the pronounced die-flaw on the obverse which is also visible on the example preserved in the Qatar National Museum. The flaw is in a more advanced state on lot 47, indicating that this coin was struck slightly later in the year than lot 48, while the Qatar specimen was probably produced before either of the coins offered here. That all three coins should have been struck from just a single pair of dies is entirely in keeping with the great rarity of Abbasid dinars of Makka today. It is interesting to note that the following lot, struck one year later in 293h, is of noticeably smaller module with the marginal legends more tightly spaced than on these issues of 292h.
(20000-25000 GBP)
