1778-1779 Token Rhode Island Ship Token, Wreath Below, Copper, AU55 PCGS. Betts-563, W-1740, R.4. The origin of the Rhode Island Ship token is thought to be either Dutch or English, and the ambiguity of its meaning has long eluded numismatists. Some argue it satirizes the American retreat on August 30, 1778, others argue it is a commentary on the British evacuating Rhode Island just one year later in October 1779, while others still claim both messages are accurate. The purpose of these medals as propaganda pieces, whether pro-British or pro-American, remains fertile ground for further research.
