Liberty Nickels
1912-S 5C MS65 PCGS. It took a mere four days to strike the entire mintage of 1912-S nickels totaling only 238,000 pieces. The small mintage was an immediate attraction to collectors and speculators alike. This pleasing Gem example is satin-smooth and lustrous with all of the 1912-S characteristics on full display. The undulating planchet and lightness of strike at the hair are diagnostic of the issue. Likewise, weakness at the bottom-left wreath elements typifies the issue. Wisps of pale-gold patina add eye appeal. Few pieces grade any finer: PCGS reports just 38 coins in a higher numeric grade (9/17).
