Proof Indian Cents
1864 1C Bronze No L PR67 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. Ex: Perfection 2. Eagle Eye Photo Seal, card included. The vivid two-sided color palette on this early Superb Gem Red and Brown proof Indian cent creates a coin of stunning eye appeal. The obverse is a lovely blend of yellow-orange with tinges of sage and rose in the fields, while the reverse takes on a deep reddish-orange color with brownish devices. This piece overall is far more Red than Brown. There is no visible sign of carbon or contact, and the preservation is uniformly excellent throughout both sides, as demanded at the Superb Gem proof grade level.
The proof mintage of the Bronze, No L 1864 Indian cents is estimated at 300 coins, but few survive as nice as this piece -- and that is true both technically and aesthetically, the latter in spades. PCGS reports only one other submission in PR67 Red and Brown, a very attractive coin but one that is more uniform and lacks the dramatic two-sided contrast of this piece. Only two examples of the Bronze No L issue in this grade bear the CAC green approval sticker -- this piece and one other (9/17).
