Liberty Nickels
1886 5C MS66 PCGS Secure. CAC. Depending on how one evaluates such things, the 1886 is considered the key to the Liberty nickel series. The 1885 claims a lower mintage, but the 1886 is more challenging to locate in high grades, particularly in Mint State. CoinFacts estimates that merely 100 or so examples survive in Gem condition. This is one of 10 Premium Gems (two in MS66+) at PCGS. There are three more at NGC, and nine coins have been endorsed by CAC at this level (9/17).
Liberty's portrait is fully defined on this amazing, Registry-worthy nickel. The stars and lower-left wreath elements are slightly softer. However, immaculate preservation, scintillating luster, and eye-catching color make up for that virtually inconsequential and often-seen deficiency. The interiors display pale powder-blue color that turns to delicate golden hues around the borders. Small cracks are seen on each side.
