Early Half Dollars
1794 50C O-101, T-7, High R.3, VG10 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 1/2. The Tompkins reference suggests a survival estimate of between 650 to 800 1794 half dollars, all varieties combined. Of these, the vast majority are from the O-101 die marriage. While the obverse is struck from a perfect die in its first use, the reverse shows familiar die cracks at F in OF and below the first S of STATES. Pleasing, olive-gray toning displays hints of gold throughout both sides. We note numerous light hair-thin lines on the obverse, generally hidden in the toning but visible with a lens.
