Early Half Dollars
1806 50C Knob 6, Small Stars, O-106, T-4, R.4, AU53 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 2/1. The 8 in the date is minutely recut on this variety, with two prominent die scratches on the reverse -- one from the upper-right shield corner, the other from the eagle's tail to the arrow fletchings. The present coin is partially lustrous and shows almost no true wear, although some strike weakness occurs on the stars and clouds above and to the right of the eagle's head, as well as on Liberty's lower bust. Silvery interiors cede to russet and olive border toning. Population (all Knob 6, Small Stars varieties combined): 6 in 53, 10 finer (9/17).
