Bust Half Dollars
1831 50C O-109, R.1, MS66 NGC. A tiny tine above R in LIBERTY and a small lump in the field near star 5 are touchpoints to confirm the O-109 variety. The date is high with 18 noticeably elevated in relation to 31. On the reverse, lines 2 ad 3 of shield stripe 1 are joined at the bottom and barely apart at the top.
Even high-grade O-109 pieces show weakness at LUR of PLURIBUS within the scroll, although this Premium Gem example is much sharper than most. The U and R are slightly incomplete but fully readable. Pearlescent mint luster glows beneath shades of lilac and reddish-orange toning that deepens to reddish-umber at the margins. The portrait and eagle are exceedingly crisp and well-defined for the variety. We note that this coin is in many ways sharper than the Pogue example (MS66 PCGS, Ex: Eliasberg) that set a record for the variety at $16,450 in February, 2016.
