Bust Half Dollars
1832 50C Small Letters, O-119, Low R.4, MS64+ PCGS. CAC. A scarce die pairing, with only one finer appearance at auction according to the Spring and Summer, 2017 listings by Stephen Herrman -- an MS65 PCGS CAC we sold at Summer FUN in July, 2009 as lot 1127. The present coin is nearly its equal. A high-end near-Gem, it displays reddish peach-gold and silver-lilac toning, with cartwheel mint luster over smoothly frosted surfaces. As usual, the obverse stars are flat and close to the edge, yet the coin is sharply struck nonetheless. The A in STATES is recut at the bases in stairstep fashion, possibly a large A over a smaller one. CAC endorsement accompanies this Choice coin, which resides near the top of the Condition Census for the variety.
