Early Dollars
1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves, B-12, BB-26, R.6, XF40 NGC. Bowers Die State I. Among the six Flowing Hair die marriages with a Three Leaves reverse, three of the die pairs are very scarce to extremely rare. This Bolender-12, BB-26 example is a scarce (R.6) pairing, while BB-19 and BB-28 are both R.8 varieties and virtually uncollectible (with just two or one piece known respectively). Perhaps 100 to 150 BB-26 dollars exist, but they are almost invariably in lower grades. We are aware of only two or possibly three AU examples that vie for the top of the roster, and XF coins make up the balance of the census. The present coin is clearly of Condition Census quality.
We do not recall seeing this exact coin previously among the two dozen or so B-12, BB-26 dollars that we have sold over the past 20 years. It displays remarkably smooth and glossy surfaces with attractive golden-gray toning and blue overtones. Struck from a desirable early state of the dies, there is no sign of the progressively stronger die crack through 7 in the date that signifies later die states. A few tiny ticks are scattered about the surfaces, but they are microscopic in nature, and there are no adjustment marks. The rims are ideal for the assigned grade. This is an important opportunity for early dollar specialists and we expect spirited competition when this exceptional specimen is called.
