Early Dollars
1796 $1 Small Date, Large Letters, B-4, BB-61, R.3, AU55 NGC. Bowers Die State III. This is a delightful, lightly toned Small Eagle dollar with golden-gray patina that deepens slightly at the borders. The smooth surfaces are free of adjustment marks or individually notable abrasions -- just a few light lines and tiny marks are visible with a glass. Sharply struck from lapped dies, Liberty's hair strands are well-defined except for the outermost curls, which are reduced by resurfacing of the obverse die.
As always, the eagle's neck, breast, and leg feathers are diminished from a shallow impression into the working die. Nice mint luster remains across both sides. While BB-61 is the most-available variety of 1796 dollars, the opportunity to own a Choice About Uncirculated example seldom occurs. Based on the most recent population reports, fewer than a dozen 1796 Small Date, Large Letters dollars are certified in AU55 or finer grades, both services combined. NGC Census: 2 in 55, 3 finer (8/17).
