Early Dollars
1796 $1 Large Date, Small Letters, B-5, BB-65, R.2, AU50 NGC. Bowers Die State II. Richly toned in natural shades of steel-gray with tinges of russet and violet, this About Uncirculated early dollar is a splendid representative of the date and type. The surfaces are smooth and free of any meaningful distractions, while traces of silver luster emerge from the comprehensive patina in protected areas.
The strike is a trifle soft on Liberty's middle curls, as well as on stars 2-4 and the corresponding letters (STA of STATES) of the reverse. Even so, about half of the eagle's breast feathers remain visible. The diagnostic die lump between the IC in AMERICA is in a fairly early state and does not touch the C. BB-65 is the sole representative of the Large Date, Small Letters type, and as such, this minimally worn and unquestionably original Small Eagle dollar is sure to earn a generous bid.
