Gobrecht Dollars
1836 $1 Judd-60 Original, Medal Alignment, Pollock-65, R.1, PR62+ PCGS. CAC. Silver. Plain Edge. No Stars Obverse, Stars Reverse. Die Alignment IV (head of Liberty opposite the O in OF after a medal turn). Die State H. All the die markers from earlier die states are clean and crisp, undoubtedly due to the high degree of preservation on this piece. The last diagnostic, a rim nick above and to the left of the U in UNITED is apparent, but somewhat difficult to pick up at first glance because of its location on the edge of the coin. Struck, as are all Originals, in the final week of December 1836. This final die state indicates this must have been one of the final dollars struck before the end of the calendar year. The surfaces are remarkably bright with deeply mirrored fields. The interiors of each side are brilliant, surrounded by thin rings of golden-russet and blue toning around the margins. Fully detailed in all areas. Exceptionally well-preserved and definitely much finer in appearance than the PR62 grade would indicate. Population: 9 in 62 (1 in 62+), 12 finer. CAC: 1 in 62, 5 finer (9/17).
