1895-S $1 MS65+ Prooflike PCGS. CAC. The 1895-S is a low-mintage semikey in the series and a formidable condition rarity in Gem or finer condition, with or without the Prooflike designation. This high-end Gem example runs contrary to all of the usual grade-limiting factors that affect the issue. Surface abrasions and bagmarks plague the 1895-S, with diminished eye appeal an inevitable result. Amazingly, none of those factors are present here.
As usual, the strike is crisp -- indeed, nearly full throughout the coin. The Prooflike fields display strong mirroring while the frosted devices provide good contrast. Perhaps the greatest attribute is the lack of any significant marks. Tiny grazes and trivial nicks are found only with diligent use of a lens. Brilliant silver flash emanates from both sides. This is the sole Plus-graded Prooflike Gem at PCGS, with one numerically finer coin. Population: 2 in 65 (1 in 65+) Prooflike, 1 finer; 1 in 66 Deep Mirror Prooflike, 1 finer. CAC: 3 in 65, 1 finer (9/17).
