Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1854-D $3 VF35 PCGS. Variety 1-A. The 1854-D three dollar gold piece is the only coin of hat denomination ever struck at the Dahlonega Mint. From a small production total of just 1,120 pieces, the 1854-D has a fairly high survival rate, perhaps due to the hoarding of precious metal coinage that occurred during the Civil War. he issue was not well-produced and most examples seen have weak striking details and lackluster, heavily abraded surfaces.
The present coin is a Choice VF specimen, with light-to-moderate wear on the well-detailed design elements and lightly abraded surfaces that retain traces of original mint luster. The overall presentation is most attractive.
