Early Half Eagles
1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Stars Reverse, BD-5, High R.5, VF35 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther c/b. Diagnostic markers for BD-5 include a Large 8, star 8 close to the cap, and star 9 pointing to the upper serif of the Y. This late die state example features a die crack from star 7 through the curls and portrait to the 8. Red-gold surfaces are choice for the grade. Strong portrait, feather, and shield detail remains despite a combination of circulation, lapping, and shallow hubbing. John Dannreuther estimates that 30 to 40 BD-5 half eagles survive. A coin strongly worth considering for the specialist.
