Early Half Eagles
1813 $5 BD-1, R.2, MS62 NGC. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The 1813 half eagle is the only representative of the Capped Bust series that exists in numbers that are somewhat available to collectors. Struck in bold relief, this lustrous and frosted Mint State example displays attractive, greenish-gold surfaces. The strike is sharp including the problematic left-hand stars, which sometimes come weak.
Just two die pairs were required to strike a total of 95,428 pieces. BD-1 outnumbers its BD-2 counterpart by approximately 3 to 1. A survival of perhaps 450 to 650 pieces makes BD-1 the logical choice for type and, as such, it is always in demand. Uncirculated coins are scarce but available. Census: 56 in 62 (1 in 62+), 60 finer. CAC: 14 in 62, 28 finer (9/17).
