Early Eagles
1803 $10 Large Reverse Stars, Star on Cloud, BD-5, High R.4, AU58 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State g/a, no reverse cracks. BD-5 is one of the more plentiful 1803 eagle varieties, although it is still scarce with only 90-110 pieces believed known in all grades. Only BD-5 and -6 employ a Large Stars reverse die, and this subtype has a combined population from the two varieties estimated to be less than 120 coins. Uncirculated examples are rare.
BD-5 is also distinctive for the tiny extra star that appears on the right-most cloud above the eagle's wing, for which numismatists still debate an explanation since it is smaller than any of the star punches known to have been in use during that period. The extra star is faint on this near-Mint example due to a network of planchet adjustment marks that criss-cross the reverse. The obverse shows no adjustment marks. The coin exhibits a good strike overall and has partially lustrous straw-gold surfaces.
