Liberty Double Eagles
1855-O $20 AU53 NGC. Variety 1. The New Orleans Mint coined a mere 8,000 double eagles in 1855, the fourth lowest mintage behind the 1854-O, 1856-O, and 1860-O twenties. Many of these coins have been lost to attrition over the decades since they were minted, and all four issues have a survival rate of less than 1%, with only about 60 to 70 examples of the 1855-O known in all grades. The combined NGC and PCGS population for this issue is 15 that grade AU53 and 24 finer pieces (9/17).
Only one die variety is known for the 1855-O double eagles, and no unusual die markers are evident. There are no die cracks or other die defects on this piece. Myriad marks are evident on the honey-gold surfaces of this piece that retains traces of luster beneath wispy rose toning. Census: 6 in 53, 17 finer (9/17).
