Liberty Double Eagles
1856 $20 MS60 PCGS. The 1856 double eagle issue is scarcer than generally realized, despite a mintage of more than 329,000 coins. Only a few dozen submissions have crossed the Mint State threshold at the two leading services. This example offers full mint luster on attractive apricot-gold surfaces that are well-struck. Extensive scrapes and abrasions on both sides limit the grade to basal Mint State, however. Much eye appeal is nonetheless present. Population: 3 in 60, 30 finer (9/17).
