Liberty Double Eagles
1884-CC $20 MS61 NGC. Variety 1-A. A pair of European hoards repatriated in the 1990s greatly changed the availability of Mint State 1884-CC double eagles, although they remain challenging in attractive Uncirculated conditions. Most of the pieces were sharply struck with frosted luster when leaving the Carson City Mint, picking up numerous small abrasions during transport and storage in mint bags.
This is an impressive MS61 example with pleasing yellow-gold patina and a strong strike. Abrasions are light and widely separated across the thickly frosted surfaces. We note a minor contact in the dentils beneath the date. Eye appeal is terrific, aided by radiant cartwheel luster and a Mint-fresh look.
