Liberty Double Eagles
1906-S $20 MS64 PCGS. CAC. The 1906 Mint Director's Report noted that the catastrophe of April 1906 caused severe damage to San Francisco's gas works, upon which the mint was dependent for its melting and assaying operations. The production of double eagles seems to have been unaffected, however, as a generous mintage of over 2 million coins was accomplished. This near-Gem exhibits vibrant mint frost over peach-gold surfaces. The strike is a bit soft, but marks are minimal. Strong eye appeal. PCGS shows only five numerically finer coins (9/17).
