Seated Half Dollars
1863-S 50C Small Broken S, WB-102, Die Pair 4, R.3, MS62 PCGS. The mintmark is entirely broken at the top, with the right top serif adrift beneath the feather tip. The date is low and further right than any other 1863-S variety. While much of the nation hoarded silver coinage during the height of the Civil War, half dollars continued to circulate in the West. As a result, Mint State 1863-S halves are scarce in any Uncirculated condition. This is a brilliant and frosted survivor, untoned except for a few speckles of deep-gray patina. Struck from a late state of the dies, with blurry dentils at the lower reverse. Population (all varieties combined): 19 in 62, 39 finer (9/17).
