Morgan Dollars
1890 $1 MS65 Prooflike PCGS. Silver dollar production among the four mints peaked in 1890 under the Sherman Silver Purchase Act with more than 38 million pieces produced. The Philadelphia Mint alone contributed over 16.8 million pieces to the total. Unwanted for circulation and unneeded for Treasury Bond redemptions (gold was preferred), most 1890 dollars were stored and eventually melted. Few survived with Gem prooflike surfaces such as this brilliant example. A few minor contact marks and a bit of field haze do not diminish the appeal. Population: 14 in 65 Prooflike, 1 finer, plus 10 in 65 Deep Mirror Prooflike, 0 finer (9/17).
