U.S. Mint Medals
1836 Medal First Steam Coinage, Mar. 23 Over Feb. 22, Thin Planchet, Bronzed Copper, Julian-MT-21, MS66 NGC. There are, in effect, two "original" strikings of the First Steam Coinage Mint Medal. The first striking was made to commemorate the historic event scheduled for Feb. 22, 1836. Identified as Julian-MT-20, it is so-dated for the February event. A mechanical problem delayed the first steam coinage until Mar. 23, 1836. The dies were subsequently modified to show the correct date, with traces of the former date visible beneath -- especially visible at the R in MAR., which was struck over B. Remnants of a 2 beneath 3 in 23 are also evident. The present Premium Gem medal was struck from the original modified dies. It is a radiant and prooflike with exceptional chestnut-brown color and essentially flawless preservation. An obverse rim cud at 6 to 7 o'clock further confirms the originality. This original Mar. 23 over FEB. 22 medal is not to be confused with one of the 20th Century restrikes, which show no evidence of the underdate or obverse rim cud.
