Ingots
Undated (1955) MS Sheared Plate Silver Ingot, San Francisco Mint. 27.39 Ounces. Sheared plate ingots are among the scarcest of all silver ingots from the San Francisco mint. Produced for only a brief time in the early to mid-1950s, only 2,000 or so were ever made. These unusual ingots were cut from a larger plate of silver into the final size. They were intended for silver storage and exchange at their intrinsic value. As a result, most were melted. Most were hallmarked on both front and back sides, but this one only has the imprint on the front. This is a nicely laid out ingot with the hallmark centered at the top, followed by the ingot number 1700 / 27.39 OZS / 999.75 FINE. Medium gray patina with considerable underlying oil-slick iridescence. The piece measures 72 x 96 mm.
